The only disadvantage of buying from the auction house is that you don't get you 2 chance of. You can, however, get packs for decent prices on the auction house (around 130 platinum vs 200 platinum directly from the store). to join arms with the Ardent Alliance or the Underworld in Hex: Shards of Fate.
So if you feel like giving Hex a try head on over to Steam, the game itself is free-to-play. The only way to get Gold (the PvE currency) is to win tournaments (which require packs and a platinum entry fee to enter).
HEX SHARDS OF FATE CODES UPDATE
Well, much to my surprise, the answer is absolutely nothing! Naturally there is a bunch of cards you're probably going to want to collect and/or purchase, it is a card game after all, but the major portions of this update appear to be completely free for everyone to enjoy.
